Return to Work and Restrictions

Field tier and aboveIn the app: /incidents/return-to-work

Return to Work keeps an injured or ill worker's status over time on the incident: off work, restricted duty or job transfer with the restrictions, and back to full duty. It counts days away and days restricted for the OSHA log, shows the next clinic visit, and lists every open case on one page.

1.Record a work status

  1. Open the injury or illness from Incident Reports. The Return to Work panel is above the form.
  2. Press Add Work Status. Choose Off work, Restricted duty or job transfer, or Back to full duty, and the day it started.
  3. For restricted duty, tick the restrictions from the clinician's note, such as no lifting over a number of pounds or no climbing ladders, and add any others in the notes. Record what the worker can and cannot do, not the diagnosis.
  4. Add the clinic, the next visit and the work status note from the clinic if you have it, then save. A new status ends the one before it the day before it starts.

2.Keep the OSHA log counts up to date

  1. The panel shows the days away and days restricted so far, and the counts on the OSHA log beside them.
  2. When they differ, it says the log is behind the timeline. Press Update Log Counts to copy the counts onto the incident, which is what the OSHA 300 log and 300A read.
  3. Nothing is written to the log without that press. The counts keep growing while a case is open, so update them again when the case ends.

3.See every open case

  1. Open Incident Reports and press Return to Work.
  2. Open Cases lists everyone off work or on restricted duty today, with their restrictions, the days so far, and the next visit. A visit that has passed shows in red.
  3. Workers back to full duty in the last 90 days are listed below. A worker's own page also shows an open case and its restrictions, so whoever assigns them work can see what they can do.

Common questions

How are the days counted?
As 29 CFR 1904.7(b)(3) describes: calendar days, not work days, starting the day after the injury or illness. A day off work counts as a day away even if a restriction also covers it. Days away and restricted together stop at 180. A status that is still going on counts up to today.
Does this decide whether the case is recordable?
No. Recordability is the employer's decision. We count the days from the dates you enter, and you decide what goes on the log.
Who can change the work status?
Anyone who can edit the incident. On a recordable, severe or closed incident that is an admin only. Follow-up visits due within a week or already passed appear in Needs Attention and the Monday reminder email, which name the worker and the date and nothing medical.
